Modafinil 200mg Tablet can be habit-forming. Be sure to take only the amount prescribed by your doctor, and use this medication only as directed. Do not take it in place of getting enough sleep.
In this double-blind study, 204 patients with shift work sleep disorder received either Modafinil 200 mg or placebo taken 30-60 min before the start of each night shift for 3 months. At the end of the study, both active doses were rated as much or moderately better than placebo on the Clinical Global Impression of Change scale.
Narcolepsy
There is no cure for narcolepsy, but medicines can improve symptoms. Regular, brief naps at regular times throughout the day and following a strict bedtime routine are important. GPs can advise on this. They may refer you to a specialist who will analyse your sleep patterns, including overnight monitoring at a specialist sleep centre.
The main symptom of narcolepsy is overwhelming daytime sleepiness, even when you have had enough sleep at night. This can lead to episodes of falling asleep suddenly in inappropriate places (sleep attacks). These are often triggered by emotion, such as anger or sadness.
Some affected people have vivid, dream-like hallucinations while falling asleep or waking up. These are called hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations and can be very frightening. Some affected people also experience cataplexy, where they lose control of their body and become paralysed for a few seconds while sleeping or waking up.
Modafinil (Modvigil 200 mg) is a wake-promoting medicine that can help you stay awake. It is used to treat narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). It can also be used to help people who have difficulty staying awake due to other conditions, such as ADHD or jet lag.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which something blocks part or all of your airway as you sleep. The resulting breaths are shallow or stop for seconds at a time, which decreases oxygen flow to your body. This is a common condition for people who work shifts, especially night shifts.
You may notice that you snore frequently and wake up gasping for air at night. Other symptoms include memory problems, morning headaches, and mood swings or depression. People who have obstructive sleep apnea are at greater risk for heart disease and stroke.
Modafinil has been shown to improve the sleep quality of shift workers with obstructive sleep apnea. However, further studies over longer periods are needed to see if the drug can also help with the symptoms of shift-work sleep disorder (SWSD).
Shift Work Sleep Disorder
Shift work disrupts the normal sleep cycle, leading to chronic sleep deprivation that can negatively affect mood, cognitive abilities and physical health. If you work a night shift and experience difficulty falling asleep, waking up too early, feeling tired even after getting 7-8 hours of sleep or having drowsy behavior during the day, your doctor may suggest modafinil to help alleviate symptoms of shift work sleep disorder (SWSD).
Your healthcare provider will use a variety of diagnostic criteria to determine whether you have SWSD. These include circadian misalignment related to your work schedule that overlaps with a traditional sleep/wake pattern, insomnia or excessive sleepiness, and a disruption in waking functioning that lasts for at least three months.
The best treatment for SWSD is making changes to your sleep routine and schedule at home and at work. You should also try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including on days off.
Other
People who work non-traditional shifts are at risk for sleep disorders. This includes police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, paramedics, factory workers and even office staff who work non-traditional hours. Getting enough sleep while working shifts is difficult and can lead to fatigue, mood changes, low energy, poor concentration and even depression.
Modafinil (Provigil) is a stimulant used to improve alertness and promote cognitive enhancement in people who have difficulty staying awake. It is a schedule IV drug that can be abused and may cause addiction. It is recommended to only take Provigil under the care of a doctor and not by yourself.
In one study, modafinil increased alertness by a factor of over 100 when compared to placebo. It also improved cognition and performance in a group of volunteers who were not sleep-deprived. The results indicate that modafinil is a safe and effective treatment for sleep problems associated with shift work. However, it is important to keep in mind that modafinil does not cure shift work sleep disorder.
